Knights Score First But Drop Men's Lacrosse Road Contest To Maroons

Salem, VA - The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team suffered their second loss of the season after a visit to Roanoke College, falling by a score of 28-6. The loss brings the team's record to 2-2 on the young season after opening the year on a two game winning streak.

After a couple of Roanoke turnovers, the Knights started off on the right foot thanks to a goal from Abe Salmon. The goal marks Salmon's fourth goal in as many games, an impressive start for the freshman attacker. The Knights managed to win the ensuing faceoff and looked to open a two goal advantage. The Maroons, however, had other ideas as they rattled off seven of the next eight goals in the opening frame.

Abe Salmon scored his second of the game off of a pass from JT Cutrer to keep the Knights in touch, and Peyton Merwin also scored to cut the deficit to 7-3, but Roanoke's dynamic offense proved to be too much. In addition to racking up goals, they held the Knights scoreless for the remaining thirteen minutes of the first half.

Despite trailing by multiple goals, Southern Virginia put together a much better fourth quarter. JT Cutrer and Garrett Zollinger helped the team score the final two goals of the contest to bring their scoring total to six goals. Zollinger and Abe Salmon each collected two goals to lead the team in offensive production, while JT Cutrer and Peyton Merwin added a goal and an assist to give the Knights four players who finished with multi-point games.

In goal, Jace Lightfoot recorded 21 saves, his first game with over 20 saves this season. Looking ahead, the Knights will pack their bags for a trip to Kentucky where they'll face Centre College on Saturday, February 22nd. The opening faceoff is slated for 1:00 PM.
