Southern Virginia University Softball Excels Over Wilson College in Home Opener

Buena Vista, Va. - The Southern Virginia University Softball women showcased an impressive offensive performance and powerful pitching to dominate over the Wilson College Phoenix in a doubleheader Friday afternoon on their home Harvey-Dryden Field.

Game 1

From the very beginning, the Knights took the reins. A two-out RBI triple from Katie Claytor got the momentum moving, closely followed by Taelor Ware slamming a two-run home run, and finished out with a solo hit from Mattison Christensen, leaving the scoreboard reading 4-0 for the Knights.

Abby Southern pitched the entire game, while allowing just four hits, only one run, and racking up a strikeout count of three.

The following innings resulted in the piling on of runs from Southern Virginia University, complete with timely hits from Katie Claytor and Dykell Jones, each contributing with doubles. RBIs from Ware and Christensen only upped the runs for the Knights, totaling a combined three.

A total of 13 hits from the Knight offense, and additional aggressive baserunning led by Dykell Jones and Matea Manuleleu, both swiping bases, played a key role in the 9-1 win for the Knights.

Game 2

The Southern Virginia University Knights kept the power going into the second game, overpowering Wilson College in a 12-3 display.

The first inning started out no different than the previous game with impressive performances from returners Dykell Jones, Katie Claytor, and Sopia Badell, and newcomer Taelor Ware. A double, a triple, and a home run led the Knights to an early 6-0 lead.

Wilson College fought back and added three runs to the board in the second, but Southern Virginia University responded promptly, adding two more runs in both the second and third innings.

Dykell Jones, a decorated senior, was a leader on the field, totaling four runs, and a homerun in the fifth inning, catapulting the Knights ahead and out of reach.

As a result of today's games, Southern Virginia University brings their record to 3-1 on the season and will look forward to a matchup against Randolph Macon on March 1st at 1:00 and 3:00 pm.
