Baltimore, MD - The Southern Virginia University Women's lacrosse team traveled to Maryland for a match with Goucher College on Saturday. The Gophers led the entire game and even with a late push, the Knights couldn't pull it off and the Gophers emerged as victors by a score of 19-12.
The game started with Goucher college taking control. Three different Gophers scored in the first quarter on eight shot attempts. Thankfully for the Knights, goalkeeper Savanna Burnett was playing well and made three saves in the first quarter. She would eventually tie her season high in saves with eight. In the second quarter the Knights pushed back. Ellie Patterson made the most of a free possession attempt and took the shot, getting the team on the board.
Goucher then went on a four score run, surging past Southern Virginia to increase their lead. The last part of the second quarter saw the teams exchange goals, with Reagan Bullock and Makenzie Mickelsen finding the scoresheet a few times. Mickelsen would lead the Knights in goals for the day, earning four. By the end of the first half, the Gophers were on top of the Knights by a score of 10-4.
With Goucher collecting most of the draw controls in the first half, the Knights tightened things up. Important draws controlled by Aubrey Reynolds gave the Knights a significant boost offensively. Following a Southern Virginia timeout, Bullock made some more noise by flinging one into the net and helping set up another goal. With the game in jeopardy late in the fourth quarter, Southern Virginia would go on a 5-0 run that was sparked by stout defense in the half.
Mia Richard's caused two turnovers to help flip the field, while Patterson picked up four ground balls. Capitalizing on multiple free position attempts, Kenzie Poulsen, Mariela Perez, Mickelsen, and Patterson all scored in the fourth quarter. Despite this, the early deficit was too much to overcome, and the Knights fell by a final score of 19-12. With 22 draw controls, Goucher was able to dominate possession most of the day, limiting the amount of attempts Southern Virginia was able to produce.
The Knights will look to avenge the loss by traveling to Sweet Briar College not far from Buena Vista, on Wednesday, March 5th, at 5:00 PM. To keep up with Southern Virginia women's lacrosse, follow @knightwlax on Instagram or visit knightathletics.com for more information and details.
