Buena Vista, Va. – The Southern Virginia University baseball team battled Virginia Wesleyan in a single-game matchup on Tuesday but fell short in the final innings, suffering an 8-3 loss to the Marlins.
The Knights struck early, applying pressure in the bottom of the first. With two runners on and two outs, Benjamin Horsley smashed a double to center field, bringing both runners home to put Southern Virginia ahead 2-0. Virginia Wesleyan responded in the top of the second, plating a run to cut the Knights' lead to 2-1.
After two scoreless frames, Stockton Hall extended the Knights' advantage with an RBI shot to right-center, making it 3-1 in the fifth inning. Southern Virginia held onto that lead until the late stages of the game, but the Marlins mounted a comeback in the final three innings, scoring seven unanswered runs to secure the 8-3 victory.
The Knights will now turn their attention to a three-game series against Brevard College on March 14 and 15.
