Bluefield, Va. - Southern Virginia University Softball put up a tough fight but narrowly fell to Bluefield State in a 4-3 loss in the first game of a doubleheader this Wednesday, and ended the second game in a loss of 5-13.
Game 1
The first game was a nail-biting event, with the Knights nearly securing the victory. A key highlight was the early offensive rally by the Knights. In the second inning, a combined group of Abby Southern, Taelor Ware, and Kayla Autry drove timely hits that added runs to the board for an early 3-1 lead.
Southern Virginia University Pitcher Malia Stauffer's performance kept the Knights within winning distance and showcased her as a frontline pitcher.
Not to be doubted was the Knight's defense, who completed an important double play to stop Bluefield's momentum, keeping the game close.
Ultimately, the offensive pursuits of Bluefield overtook Southern Virginia University and the Knights took the loss with 4-3.
Game 2
Game two for this series was dominated by Bluefield State from the get go, but impressive highlights for the Knights came from the fourth inning.
Southern Virginia University erupted for 5 runs, with contributions from Jessica Jones, who drove in three runs, and a clutch RBI single from Taelor Ware, and momentarily shifted the momentum.
Although the loss was deep, Southern Virginia University showed resilience and executed key plays by still getting runners on base and contributing to the rally.
The Knights look forward to games against Bridgewater at home on March 14th at 2:00 and 4:00 PM.
