Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team opened the weekend with two resounding wins on senior night. First, they swept through a newly added CVC opponent, Kean, before finishing the night with a victory over Virginia Wesleyan to keep their undefeated record intact.
Game One
In the evening's first match with Kean, Jeremy Brown got the home crowd rocking with two kills to open the match. The seniors led the way from start to finish and helped the Knights to a 1-0 advantage. In the second frame, Kean fought hard to retain an early lead they developed at 10-9.
However, the Knights rattled off five consecutive points, forcing their opponents into several attacking errors. Samuel Candland powered home numerous attacks, helping his team to a six point advantage before clinching the second set, 25-20.
With another sweep in sight, Southern Virginia came out firing in the third. The Knights scored seven of the first eight points as Jeremy Brown became unstoppable, totaling six kills in the final frame to single-handedly put the opponents away. Curtis Stone brought the Knights home with an ace, bringing their perfect record to 21-0.

Game Two
The Marlins from Virginia Wesleyan were the Knights' second opponent of the evening. After putting the finishing touches on the first match, Curtis Stone was inserted into the starting lineup and made a quick impression on the match. Stone registered back-to-back kills with Kyler Evans to help Southern Virginia to a 9-5 lead in the first.
Senior Maxym Sutton was also wreaking havoc, producing a kill and a block on consecutive points. Ultimately, the seniors led the way en route to a win in the first set, 25-21. Despite falling behind, the Marlins were determined to make the Knights earn every point the rest of the way.
Kristo Bianchin started the second frame on time, giving his team three important points in a back and forth opening few minutes. Virginia Wesleyan hung tough, using excellent defense to fend off a relentless Knights attack. Several Southern Virginia attacking errors propelled the Marlins to a 19-15 lead, putting the home team on the verge of losing their first set this season.
Out of a timeout, Christian Sheaffer gave the Knights a surge of momentum to tie the score at 19. Virginia Wesleyan eventually held set point at 25-24, but three straight points allowed Southern Virginia to overcome their opponents in a thrilling finish.
In the third and potential final frame, a flurry of service aces helped the Knights to a double-digit lead. Jeremy Brown had the last say of the night, sending down his 13th kill to secure the sweep. Maxym Sutton finished with a season high of 33 assists to guide the attack, while Justin Madsen led the defense with 10 digs.
