Buena Vista, VA - If two wins weren't enough this weekend, the Southern Virginia University men's volleyball team secured another sweep on Saturday afternoon. Kyler Evans led a swarming Southern Virginia attack over Rutgers-Newark, helping the Knights remain undefeated in the CVC.
After falling behind early, the Knights found their legs toward the end of the first set, using four consecutive points to separate themselves from the Raiders and ultimately claim the opening frame, 25-20. Evans was the early story, recording five kills and taking part in three blocks.
A strong start to the second gave the Knights a 13-7 lead by the midway point, spurred on by stingy defense at the net. The Raiders played tough and traded points with the Knights for several minutes, but a couple of service errors spurned their momentum and led to a 25-19 defeat.
Christian Sheaffer and Samuel Candland traded points for much of the third set, but it wasn't quite enough to shake their opponents. There were fifteen ties and several lead changes, but Southern Virginia somehow found the energy to finish off another quality opponent, taking the final set 25-23 to clinch the win.
Kyler Evans, affectionately known as "Big Country," dominated play with 11 kills while hitting .786, one of the best marks in a single-match in program history. He also chipped in well defensively with five blocks. The quad-match rounds out the Knights home schedule in Knight Arena this season. They'll be on the road for the next seven matches before shifting focus to the postseason.
