Southern Virginia Men’s Lacrosse Rallies Past Huntingdon For First Conference Win

Buena Vista, VA - The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team successfully defended its home turf at Knight Stadium, using a high-scoring second half to defeat USA South foe, Huntingdon College, 18-11.

The Hawks drew first blood in the opening minute, sending their first shot attempt into the back of the net for the early lead. Stout defense held the Knights scoreless for nearly the entire first quarter, helping Huntingdon to a 4-0 advantage. Pierce Brinton finally broke the ice for Southern Virginia, potting their first two goals to trail by just two at the break.

The second quarter began much better for the Knights. They scored on the opening possession and then added another after JT Cutrer caused a turnover shortly after a faceoff loss. JC Winterton leveled the score before the end of the half, potting his first of three goals.

Despite giving up the first goal of the second half, the Knights dominated the pace of play and outscored the Hawks 7-1 in the third quarter. Their defense all stood out, forcing the visitors into 11 turnovers while holding them to just three successful clears out of six attempts.

Tyson Mauri continued his impressive in the final frame, Scoring and then assisting on a pair of goals while a man-up. Ultimately, the Knights cruised to their fourth win of the season and remain unbeaten against Huntingdon in four meetings all-time.

Mauri's 8 points led a balanced Southern Virginia attack that had five players record multi-goal games. Porter Alleman had a career day in faceoffs, winning eight of his twelve attempts to aid in a big second-half push. JT Cutrer's three caused turnovers led the defense while Jace Lightfoot chipped in five saves.

The Knights visit Greensboro College next Wednesday, March 26th, at 7:00 PM for their next matchup before returning home for a two-game homestand.
