Newport News, Va. – The Southern Virginia University baseball team took on Christopher Newport University in a single-game matchup over spring break. Despite a strong start, the Knights ultimately fell to the Captains 17-4.
Southern Virginia found early momentum in the top of the second inning. Down 2-0, the Knights loaded the bases with a series of well-placed hits. The pressure rattled the Captains' pitching, leading to a walk that brought Garrett Stauffer home for the Knights' first run. A wild pitch allowed Benjamin Horsley to score, tying the game at 2-2. Ryan Farris then grounded out to shortstop, driving in Marcelino Leonardo Jr. to give the Knights a 3-2 lead. With two outs, Seth Lloyd delivered a clutch single up the middle, extending the Knights' advantage to 4-2.
Despite the strong start, Southern Virginia struggled to contain Christopher Newport's offense. Catcher Robert Stempin provided a solid defensive presence, recording six putouts behind the plate, but the Knights ultimately surrendered 15 unanswered runs, falling 17-4.
Southern Virginia baseball now shifts focus to its upcoming three-game series at Pfeiffer University on March 28 and 29.
