Misenheimer, N.C. – Southern Virginia University baseball opened its three-game series against Pfeiffer University with a commanding 4-1 win Friday night, fueled by a stellar complete-game performance from Zach Geertsen on the mound.
Geertsen was dominant, pitching all nine innings while allowing just one run, keeping the Falcons' offense in check throughout the night.
The Knights struck early in the top of the first when Seth Lloyd roped a double down the right-field line to spark the offense. Lloyd then advanced to third on a wild pitch before Geertsen helped his own cause, grounding out to shortstop to bring Lloyd home and give Southern Virginia a 1-0 lead.
After two scoreless innings, the Knights broke through again. Marcelino Leonardo Jr. lined a single up the middle to extend the lead to 2-0. Ben Agnew followed with a base hit to right field, tacking on another run. Lloyd capped off the three-run rally with an RBI single to left, allowing Leonardo Jr. to score and push the Knights' advantage to 4-0.
Pfeiffer managed to scrape across a late run, but Geertsen remained in control, shutting the door to seal the Knights' victory.
Southern Virginia will look to carry its momentum into the final two games of the series against Pfeiffer on March 29.
