Buena Vista, VA - In a non-conference showdown, the University of Lynchburg traveled to Knight Stadium to play the Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team. Both teams came into the game ranked in the middle of the pack in their respective conferences. Ultimately, the Hornets showcased their prowess and the Knights lost in a 20-3 defeat.
In the first quarter, Lynchburg jumped to a quick two goal lead, but Ellie Patterson and Paysen Grandy responded with a pair, bringing the score to a deadlock after several free position opportunities.
The Hornets then proceeded to go on a six goal run in the remaining minutes of the quarter. Southern Virginia struggled to find the back of the net, committing multiple shot clock violations. Lynchburg capitalized on their turnovers by executing fast transitions before the Knights defense could get set.
Savanna Burnett faced a career-high 42 shots, making seven saves in the first half in a relentless effort to thwart the Hornets, but the attack soon proved too heavy. The half ended with a commanding lead for Lynchburg, 11-2.
In the second half, lengthy possessions fatigued the Knights defense. Southern Virginia did have one spark with Makenzie Mickelsen drawing a free position attempt in a man-up situation. She was able to slip a ball underneath the keeper to give the Knights another goal. However, that would be the last tally for Southern Virginia in a 20-3 defeat.
The Knights will look to bounce back as they travel to Rocky Mount, N.C. to play North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday, March 29th at 12:00 PM.
