Rocky Mount, N.C. - In a noon-day matchup, the Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team matched up with the North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops. After a recent loss, the Knights avenged themselves, putting on a clinic by scoring the most goals this season to best in a 21-1 triumph.
The scoring started early in the first when Ellie Patterson found the back of the net just minutes into the game. Reagan Bullock would follow suit shortly after with two goals of her own. Not to be outdone, Kenzie Poulsen scored twice in the first as well.
Southern Virginia's high shot volume would lead to scoring plenty of scoring opportunities that overwhelmed the Battling Bishops.
Freshmen duo Paysen Grandy and Mia Richards teamed up for three goals throughout the quarter. The string of goals were fueled by the Knights' ability to win every draw control in the quarter. Makenzie Mickelsen, Patterson, and Richards helped limit their opponents to only three draw controls all game.
The Knights maintained their high shot volume to start the second quarter. With the lead comfortably in their favor, Southern Virginia spread the ball around as Sydney Bastian joined the fun with a goal of her own. Following another trio of goals, the Knights went into halftime with the lead, 12-1.
The Knights continued the onslaught in the second half. Bullock highlighted the score sheet by knocking in her fourth goal of the day. Mariela Perez also stepped up in the second half to record a hat trick.
Stout defense from Ellie Patterson led to three caused turnovers and stifled the Battling Bishops ability to create offense. This helped Southern Virginia in transition, giving the team numerous scoring opportunities.
The fourth frame saw Riley Fink score the first goal of her young career. Fink also recorded the final assist of the game on a Mickelsen goal with under thirty seconds remaining to end the lopsided game. Southern Virginia came away with the win, 21-1.
With vigor, the Knights will look to 'fool' Pfeiffer University in an important conference contest on April Fool's Day. The game is set for April 1st at 4:00 PM at Knight Stadium where Southern Virginia will aim to conquer yet another conference foe.
