Southern Virginia Men’s Lacrosse Makes It Four Wins In Its Last Five

Brevard, NC - In a rare Monday evening tilt, the Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team passed through Western North Carolina for a matchup with Brevard College. Behind an explosive offense, the Knights put away the Tornados early, ultimately winning by a score of 23-4.

The Knights put the pressure on early as Tyson Mauri capitalized on a pass from JC Winterton to strike first. While Brevard leveled the score a few minutes later, it was all Southern Virginia the rest of the way as seven straight goals led to an 8-1 lead by the end of fifteen.

The Knights continued an unrelenting attack in the second quarter to push the lead to double digits by the end of the half. JC Winterton potted another just before the break as part of a four goal first half for the freshman on the rise. Faceoffs also played a big part in the early success as the Knights won nine of fourteen draws.

The third quarter became a defensive battle for the first several minutes. However, the Knights broke things open again with four goals in a matter of sixty seconds thanks to four consecutive faceoff wins. It was cruise control from there on out as numerous players found the scoresheet en route to a 17-2 lead after the third.

Six different Knights filled the net in the final frame, including Scott DuPaix and Colin Overman. But nobody took part in more goals than Tyson Mauri who tallied four goals and seven assists to help the team to a 23-4 victory. Mauri now has 19 points in his last two games.

Porter Alleman had tremendous success in faceoffs, winning 13 of a possible 17. Fellow newcomer JC Winterton had a career day and was the second Knight to finish with double figures in points thanks to five goals and five assists. Defensively, the Knights more than tripled the Tornados in caused turnovers with 15 compared to 4, spurring on the onslaught.
