LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - In an action-packed opening weekend of women's volleyball, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball used two come-from-behind wins to finish a perfect 3-0 at the Covenant Classic.
On Friday, the Knights defeated Spalding and the tournament hosts, Covenant, each in four sets. On Saturday, they showed no fatigue in a sweep of George Fox. It's the first 3-0 start for the program since 2021 when the Knights opened the season with five consecutive wins.
Game One
In the first meeting with Spalding in nearly ten years, the first set became a rollercoaster. Seven lead changes occurred before the Golden Eagles scored five of the last six points to steal the set.
Despite the opening frame loss, the Knights were unfazed. Fueled by Aubrey Packer's 19 kills and Gracie Fulton's 21 digs, the Knights controlled the pace of play the rest of the afternoon, winning each of the last three sets by an average of eight points to win the first match of the year.
Game Two
The Knights' second match of the day against Covenant followed a similar trend. The Scots had the upperhand in the opening set, clinching a 1-0 lead.
Once again, Southern Virginia rallied in the second set and knotted the sets at one apiece after Summer Hahn delivered two aces. In the fourth and potential final frame, Hahn's solo block secured the win to maintain the Knights' perfect record.
Game Three
Southern Virginia's final game of the tournament against George Fox became a defensive clinic from the Knights' middle blockers. In the opening set, Ryann Vail combined with Macie Weatherly for a huge run of four consecutive blocks to vault the Knights into the lead.
The team assumed control of the game and defeated their opponents swiftly in three sets. Talia Quinn and Lucy Richins each recorded three aces in the effort.
Looking Ahead
After a successful opening tournament, Debby Baker's squad will remain on the road against Lynchburg on Tuesday, September 2nd. Start time is set for 6:00 PM.
