LYNCHBURG, Va. - Despite a convincing opening set win, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball lost its first game of the season at the hands of the Hornets from Lynchburg, 3-1.
Spurred on by two aces from Gracie Fulton, the Knights used a run of six consecutive points to gain the upper hand in the opening frame.
They brushed aside a late Hornets run and scored four of the last five points, including a set winning kill from Summer Hahn to clinch a 1-0 lead.
Lynchburg returned the favor in the second, leading from start to finish to tie the game at one set a piece. In the third, Southern Virginia appeared to have regained momentum after recording six of the set's first eight points. However, a surge from the Hornets proved too much and the hosts took care of the Knights, 25-15.
Ultimately, Lynchburg successfully defended its home court, providing Southern Virginia its first loss of the season.
Aubrey Packer finished in double figure for kills again to lead the Knights attack. The team combined for 15 blocks, nearly doubling the Hornets' total, and Gracie Fulton totaled a game-high of three aces.
Looking Ahead
On Friday, September 5th, the Knights will begin play in the W&L Invitational with a 4:30 PM matchup with St. Mary's College of Maryland. All games will be played in the Duchossois Athletic Center, split between the Holekamp and Doremus gymnasiums.
