FERRUM, Va. - Fresh off a win in their home opener on Tuesday night, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team took down a cross-state and Division ll foe, Ferrum, in three decisive sets.
The Knights, who have looked better and better each game, made the most of their attacks in the first set. Southern Virginia doubled up the Panthers in kills and took the opening frame, 25-16.
The second became much more back and forth. Four consecutive points from the Panthers gave them an 18-16 lead, putting pressure on the Knights to battle back. Summer Hahn managed a block and two aces over the next few points to snatch the lead back.
Finally, a kill by Emma Broadbent off a feed from Gracie Fulton clinched the set, putting Ferrum on the brink of defeat.
In the third, Daisy Oviedo continued a superb day at the net, securing her sixth block of the day to lead both teams. Southern Virginia led the entire third, finishing off the Panthers with seven of the final nine points of the day to complete the sweep.
Aubrey Packer and Anne Downs led the attack with 11 and 8 kills respectively. Ruby Blamires and Lucy Richins split setting duties, each recording 13 assists in the win.
Looking Ahead
Over the next few days, the team will take some deserved time off from competition before opening league play next weekend. Southern Virginia will host Pfeiffer on Saturday, September 20th at 11:00 AM to open its first and only home tri-match of the season.
It also marks the start of their title defense against USA South competitors.
