Buena Vista, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team extended their conference winning streak with a 2-0 victory over the Avenging Angels of Meredith College.
The Knights controlled the pace from the opening whistle, piling on pressure with early corners before finally breaking through in the 15th minute. Rachel Bodkin delivered a well-placed corner into the box, where Ashley Hamblin capitalized to give Southern Virginia the early lead.
Despite the close scoreline at the half, the Knights held firm control — outshooting Meredith 9-2 and holding a 4-0 edge in corners, with six of their attempts landing on goal.
The second half saw more of the same as Southern Virginia's attack kept Meredith on the defensive. Xoie Warner, Courtney Montes, and Delin Peterson pushed forward with pace, while McKenna Currey and Desana Grabarczyk each nearly doubled the lead with close-range chances late in the half.
Meredith tried to respond with a corner and free kick in the 82nd minute, but the Knights' defense stood strong. On the counter, Hamblin once again sparked the attack, winning a corner. Peterson finished the set piece opportunity to seal the 2-0 win in the 88th minute on the corner from Warner.
With three straight conference victories, Southern Virginia now takes a brief pause from USA South play before hosting Randolph-Macon on Wednesday, October 1st, at 7:00 PM.
