Knights Women’s Soccer Drops Season Opener to Mary Washington

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team fell 3-1 to the Eagles of Mary Washington in their 2025 season opener.

The Eagles controlled much of the first half, opening with a corner kick and several early shots. After the Knights answered with a pair of corners, Mary Washington broke through in the 30th minute and added another goal in the 42nd to carry a 2-0 lead into halftime. At the break, the Eagles held an 8-1 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corners.

Southern Virginia came out strong to start the second half as Matia Murray bent in a corner kick that curved directly into the box, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with the Knights' first goal of the season. However, Mary Washington responded in the 57th minute with their third goal of the match. Despite quality second-half attempts from Delin Peterson, Hailey Gadd, Xoie Warner, and McKenna Currey, the Knights were unable to break through again against the Eagles' defense, falling 3-1.

The Knights return to action Saturday, Sept. 6, when they travel to face Division II Ferrum College. The teams are evenly matched in their last four meetings, each earning one win with two draws.
