BUENA VISTA, Va. - On a beautiful evening at Knight Stadium, Southern Virginia University men's soccer fell just short of a victory during its home opener against Bridgewater. Despite a ten save effort from keeper Troy Chamberlain, the Knights fell 2-1.
The visitors jumped out to an early lead, potting two goals in the opening 26 minutes. Despite the early deficit, the Knights found life when an impressive solo effort by Tate Hickman resulted in a penalty for Southern Virginia.
With little hesitation, Hickman lined up his shot and buried one into the right side of the cage to cut the lead in half. It's the second goal of Hickman's young career, he has both of the Knights goals in three games this season.
The rest of the game was a hard-fought, physical tilt. The Knights were locked in a battle of possession and were unable to generate much sustained pressure.
Meanwhile, freshman goalkeeper Troy Chamberlain was a wall in front of the Southern Virginia net. He made five saves off of quality scoring chances in the second half to keep the team within striking distance. Chamberlain finished the night with ten saves.
Ultimately, Bridgewater hung on for a quality road win to leave Southern Virginia still in search of its first victory of the season.
Looking Ahead
Next up, the Knights will travel out of state for its first ever matchup with Sewanee in Tennessee this Saturday, September 6th. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 PM ET.
