New York, N.Y. — The Southern Virginia University men's wrestling team battled through a tightly contested road dual and came away with a 24–20 victory over Hunter College in the heart of the Big Apple, using four match wins by fall to power a dramatic comeback.
The Knights struck first at 125 pounds when Jaton Wellington set the tone with a pin of Muhamadu Konteh at 3:27, giving Southern Virginia an early lead. Hunter answered back by winning five of the next six bouts, building a narrow advantage through victories at 133, 141, 149, 157, and 165 pounds.
With the dual hanging in the balance, the Knights surged late. At 174 pounds, Tanner Giatras halted Hunter's momentum by pinning Jordan Fisher at 5:46. Harrison Hoopes followed with a hard-fought 7–4 decision at 184, and Tradyn Henderson delivered another clutch performance at 197, edging Alimkhan Guseinov 12–10.
The match came down to the heavyweight bout, where Marc Richardson sealed the team victory in emphatic fashion, pinning Hayden Roy in just 37 seconds to secure the 24–20 win for the Knights.
Southern Virginia's late-match surge showcased its depth and resilience, turning a tight contest into a statement road victory.
The Knights now return home looking to build on that momentum as they host Randolph College on Wednesday, January 14, at 7:00 p.m. inside Knight Arena.
