Southern Virginia Men’s Soccer Downed By Bishops Despite Early Lead

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team continued its tour of North Carolina this week, as they faced off with North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

Looking to build on a win over Johnson & Wales just a few days ago, the Knights were off and running after they tallied the first goal of the game just over 10 minutes into the first half.

Landon Stock did well in creating chaos for the Bishops defenders and keeper, ultimately leaving a loose ball for Zach Bartholomew on the left side of the box.

Bartholomew squeezed a shot between the keeper and the post to secure his first goal since 2024, and factored in on a goal for the second time in as many games.

Despite the early Southern Virginia lead, the hosts pushed back and knotted the score just seven minutes later. With momentum in their favor, the Bishops scored again in the 32nd minute, putting the Knights on their heels.

In search of an equalizer, Southern Virginia kept a consistent rotation of fresh legs and outshot their opponents in the second half. Holden Calder connected with the right post in the 70th minute, but that would be the closest they'd get to a tie.

Isaac Northcutt made three saves in net as the Knights two-game unbeaten streak came to an end.

Looking Ahead

Coach Pemberton's squad will look to get back on track in their next match against Greensboro on Wednesday, October 7th in Buena Vista. Kickoff is set for 6:00 PM.
