CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Southern Virginia University men's and women's swim teams started their quests for Independent South Championships on Thursday.

After completing prelims during the morning session, the Knights racked up the points in the evening when several finals were contested. 

One of the big highlights of the day was the women's quartet of Jamie Horne, Rylee Nugent, Emma Chamberlain, and Olive King. They broke a program record to win the 4x200 free relay in a time of 8:16.31, over twenty seconds ahead of the second place.

Individually, Emma Chamberlain, Holton Bundy, Jamie Horne and Sam Dearing all won their respective events. Horne's win in the women's 50 free nearly eclipsed her own meet record of 24.55.

Dearing and Ben Thorne also cleaned up in the men's 50 free, going one-two in times of 21.50 and 21.77, respectively. 

By the end of the day, the men's team held a slight edge over the rest of the field in the team standings, looking to claim their first conference title since 2023. The women have already hit the century mark with 107 points, well ahead of Piedmont in second.

Day Two

Events on Friday start at 10:00 AM with the finals of the 200 free relays. Results will be posted once completed.
