BUENA VISTA, Va. - It was all business for the Southern Virginia University women's basketball team on Wednesday night.
An offensive onslaught in the first quarter helped the Knights jump out to a big, early lead, one they'd keep until the final buzzer in a 80-37 victory over Salem.
Maria Savvun dropped in the first made field goal of the contest with a three on Southern Virginia's opening possession. She then ended the scoring in the quarter with another three, putting the Knights up 24-9.
A lineup consisting of three forwards helped Southern Virginia dominate the middle, allowing Salem just 16 points in the paint the entire game.
With the lead growing past thirty points, the Knights were in cruise control. Ruth Kempler was well on her way to another double-double and added three blocks to her day. Anna Kimball was also stellar, contributing 16 points while shooting over 50% from the floor.
In the fourth, Emma Openshaw subbed in and nailed three shots from beyond the arc to put an exclamation point on the evening.
Looking Ahead
Still undefeated in league play, Southern Virginia is eyeing the top seed in the USA South Tournament for the third consecutive season.
Their next obstacle in that pursuit is Brevard College, rematch number two from the conference final last February. Tipoff in Buena Vista is set for Saturday, February 14th at 2:00 PM.
