Southern Virginia Women’s Basketball Has Conference Winning Streak Snapped

BUENA VISTA, Va. - For the time in nearly two full seasons, Southern Virginia University women's basketball team came out on the losing end of a USA South matchup.

Brevard College managed their first win against the Knights in over three years, grinding out a 73-63 victory.

It was a close game all the way through, as neither team managed a lead of more than a few points.

Both sides hit their fair share of three-pointers, including one with less than twenty seconds remaining in the first half to give Brevard a slight edge, 34-31. Despite the deficit, the Knights were controlling the paint with tons of offensive boards.

The defining moment of the game came with just under two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. With the score tied at 63, Brevard caused a couple of Southern Virginia turnovers which turned into points the other way.

Ultimately, the Knights came up empty on their following possessions as the Tornados hit a few free throws to collect a signature victory.

Anna Kimball collected a double-double while Maria Savvun led the offense with 15 points and 9 assists.

Looking Ahead

Southern Virginia will look to shake off a rare loss against conference opponents when they host Mary Baldwin for senior night on Tuesday, February 17th. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM.
