Southern Virginia Women’s Lacrosse Drops Home Opener Despite Patterson’s Four-Goal Outing

BUENA VISTA, Va.  - At long last, the Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team was back on home turf for their home opener of the 2026 season.

As they navigated through a slew of challenging opponents to open the season, the Knights couldn't produce their first win of the season, falling to Virginia Wesleyan by a count of 19-5.

The Marlins jumped out to a sizable lead in the first quarter thanks to the play of Reese Morganthaler, who would ultimately end the game with a game-high six goals. In the second frame, Southern Virginia regrouped and played much better.

Just over a minute into the quarter, Ellie Patterson caused a turnover to set her team up on the attack. She eventually got it back, made her way past a couple of defenders and labeled a shot for the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Patterson would tally another goal just before half on a free position attempt, leaving the score at 10-2.

While the Knights were producing quality scoring chances, they couldn't find the back of the net enough to keep pace with the Marlins.

Ricky Richards gave Southern Virginia a fifth goal and her first of the season after an impressive solo effort to get a shot past several defenders

Eventually, the final buzzer sounded to hand the Knights their second defeat of the season. Patterson led the team with four goals but also made an impact defensively, causing three turnovers.

Savanna Burnett made nine saves in goal and Sydney Bastian tallied four draw controls, a game high.

Looking Ahead

The Knights will look for their first win of the young season in their next matchup, a visit to William Peace in Raleigh, North Carolina. It will also be the first contest in league play. The opening draw is slated for 3:00 PM on Thursday, March 5th.
