Epic Comeback Lifts Southern Virginia Women’s Basketball Over Pacers

RALEIGH, N.C - The Southern Virginia University women's basketball team put together a resounding victory on Saturday afternoon in Raleigh.

With their backs against the wall in the final few minutes, the Knights scored the final 12 points to snatch a victory from William Peace, 58-54.

After Maria Savvun hit a three to open the scoring, the Pacers coupled good shooting with stellar defense to open a ten point lead and stymie Southern Virginia's attack.

A jumper from Lily Delarosa to open the second quarter got the Knights back on track. They also returned the favor on defense, allowing the Pacers just eight points before halftime to bring the deficit to just four at 28-24.

Slowly but surely, the Knights continued to trim the deficit. They eventually took the lead with a minute to go in the third after a layup from Ruth Kempler on the fastbreak.

William Peace managed to tie the game before the end of the third, setting up for a thrilling final quarter of play.

In one of the most exciting finishes in the USA South this season, Southern Virginia faced perhaps their biggest test of the season.

With just three and a half minutes left in regulation, they found themselves down 54-46. Not willing to give up, the Knights slowly chipped away at the lead, forcing several tough shots and turnovers from their opponents in the process.

A driving layup from Samantha Smith and then another three from Maria Savvun with 40 seconds remaining to vault Southern Virginia into the lead. Smith then tallied a block on the ensuing possession to finish off an incredible comeback.

Aysia Foster grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked three shots while Savvun led the scoring with 14.

Looking Ahead

Now 14-0 in league play, Southern Virginia moves onto Salem College who they'll host on Wednesday, February 11th at 5:30 PM.
