MISENHEIMER, N.C. - To continue their slate of USA South contests, the Southern Virginia University women's lacrosse team traveled south to face Pfeiffer on Wednesday afternoon.
After a strong first half, the Knights held off a late rally from Pfeiffer to secure their second conference win of the season, 10-8.
A flurry of Southern Virginia shots highlighted the opening few minutes of the first, before both teams played lockdown defense, leading to just a 1-1 score after fifteen minutes.
In the second, things began to open up for the Knights. They scored on three consecutive possessions to open the quarter, eventually taking a 5-1 lead after a goal from Ricky Richards while a Falcon defender served penalty time.
At the end of the third, Paysen Grandy notched her second of the game to give Southern Virginia a healthy lead of 9-5 going into the final frame.
Aubrey Reynolds was in the midst of a tremendous defensive performance, causing five turnovers to lead both squads.
In the closing minutes of regulation, Pfeiffer had trimmed the lead to one until a clutch free position goal from Ricky Richards put their momentum to a halt. With Savanna Burnett in goal, the Knights shut the door over the final three minutes to secure a hard-fought road win.
In addition to Richards' hat trick, Ellie Patterson also recorded a three point outing, while Sydney Knight and Paysen Grandy chipped in with two goals apiece.
