BUENA VISTA, Va. - In a tightly contested matchup between two out-of-conference foes, the Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team fell victim to an impressive comeback from Berry College in a 10-7 victory for the Vikings.
Defense was the story in the first quarter as the Knights jumped out to a 2-1 lead after staving off three extra-man opportunities.
Garrett Zollinger and Clay Haacke scored the game's first two goals just over a minute apart before Berry cut the lead in half with under three minutes remaining in the first.
Haacke seemed to take over in the second, assisting on a man-up goal before zipping one past the keeper in the final seconds of the half to help his team take a 6-4 lead into the break.
Despite the lead at half, the field began to tilt towards Southern Virginia goalie Jace Lightfoot in the final two quarters. Lightfoot made five saves under remarkable pressure in the third, enough to keep the Knights within striking distance.

After relinquishing the lead, Davis Grant scored for the Knights while a man down to bring Southern Virginia within a goal. However, it was the last time they'd find the back of the net as Berry held on for a 10-7 win on the road.
Lightfoot would total 12 saves while Max Taylor caused a career high four turnovers. Haacke led the scoring for the Knights with two goals and an assist.
Looking Ahead
Southern Virginia returns to the field to continue a four game homestand on Tuesday, March 31st against Greensboro.
It'll be a key matchup within the USA South as the teams occupy the second and third spots in the current conference standings.
