GREENSBORO, N.C. - During a weekend trip to North Carolina, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team recorded its first tie of the season in a 1-1 result against Guilford.
Just over six minutes after the opening kickoff, Guilford drew first blood after an attacker got loose at the top of the box before drilling a near perfect in the top corner of the cage.
The Knights managed to respond midway through the opening half on a free kick opportunity. Rookie Logan Gubler snuck the set piece around a four man wall and squeezed a shot in between the keeper and the right post to knot the game at one.
The teams traded chances the rest of the way, each keeper required to make several quality stops.
Isaac Northcutt and Zack Snow split duties in goal for Southern Virginia and combined for six saves.
Dexter Gunderson had a pair of golden opportunities late in the game, but the combination of a fingertip save by the Gullford keeper and a deflected pass by the defender kept the score level by the final whistle.
Looking Ahead
Still with a trio of non-conference opponents ahead on the schedule, the next test for the Knights will be against Hampden-Sydney, a team that's received votes on the national poll. Kickoff will occur in Buena Vista on Wednesday, September 16th at 6:00 PM.
