LEXINGTON, Va. - Staying close to home, the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team competed in the 2026 W&L Invite. In the end, the Knights lost a pair of matches against a couple of premier teams in their respective regions.
Game One
Gettysburg College was the opening match opponent for Southern Virginia. It began with an opening set thriller that the Knights would eventually win, 30-28. Anne Downs was off to a hot start, recording nine kills to that point.
The Bullets returned serve in the second, winning handedly before taking the next two sets as well to dispatch the Knights in four sets. Laura Forsgren and Baylee Mirabal each recorded at 20 digs, career high for both, while Downs led the attack with 13 kills.
Game Two
Southern Virginia went straight into its next match with the weekend hosts, Washington and Lee. The Generals, who seem to be contenders on the national stage each year, set the pace from the opening serve.
The Knights played much better in the second, leading the set as late as 16-14, but couldn't finish the job and were ultimately defeated in straight sets. Ryann Vail was a force at the net, tallying seven blocks while Mirabal recorded another 20+ dig performance.
Looking Ahead
Debby Baker's squad will dive into the USA South portion of their schedule this weekend. They'll travel to Brevard for a tri-match with the Tornados and North Carolina Wesleyan. The Knights will face the latter in the first match of the day on Saturday, September 19th at 12:00 PM.
