BUENA VISTA, Va. - The conference slate for the Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team wasted no time in ramping up, as their first match in league play for 2026 was a rematch of last year's USA South Tournament final.
The Knights battled with the Pride of Greensboro College in a five-set marathon, which ultimately ended in a victory for Greensboro.
After a very even opening set, two straight kills from Macie Weatherly gave Southern Virginia an important 1-0 lead.
The Pride dominated play in the second to tie things up at one set apiece, but the Knights once again found a way in a wild third set to put Greensboro on the brink of defeat. Trailing 22-16 late in the fourth, Southern Virginia nearly produced a remarkable comeback, but Pride sealed things to force a winner-take-all fifth set.
To end a long and thrilling evening in Knight Arena, the visitors would eventually have the final say, knocking off Southern Virginia for their eleventh win of the season.
Summer Hahn and Ryann Vail led the Knights with six blocks each, while Baylee Mirabal had 13 kills to aid the attack. Mirabal also collected 23 digs, her third straight game with over 20. Laura Forsgren added 19 digs, just short of her season high.
Looking Ahead
The Knights are back on the road this weekend to visit another USA South rival, Meredith, who's undefeated in league play so far. The match is scheduled for this Saturday, September 26th, at 11:00 AM.
