Fayetteville, N.C. – The Southern Virginia University women's soccer team opened conference play in style Sunday afternoon, earning a 2-0 victory over the Monarchs of Methodist University.
The matchup marked the eighth meeting between the two programs, with the Knights improving to 4-1 in the last five meetings.
Southern Virginia struck early, scoring in the opening minute. McKenna Currey sent a pass ahead to Halle Willardson, who made a quick move inside before placing a perfect finish into the top-left corner to give the Knights a 1-0 lead just 20 seconds into the match.
The Knights doubled their advantage in the 36th minute when Brynlee Sommer sent a pass up the middle to an open Lottie Smith. Smith calmly finished into the bottom-right corner to put Southern Virginia ahead 2-0 heading into halftime.
Southern Virginia continued to control the match throughout the second half, holding a commanding 24-4 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Methodist goalkeeper made 13 saves to keep the Monarchs within reach, but the Knights' defense held firm to secure the 2-0 shutout.
Southern Virginia returns home Wednesday night to host NC Wesleyan at 5 p.m. The Knights hold a 5-0-1 all-time record against the Bishops through six meetings, remaining unbeaten in the series.
