HARRISONBURG, Va. - In their final contest before league play begins, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team was defeated by Eastern Mennonite after a late go-ahead goal.
Scoring opportunities were difficult to produce in the opening half. The teams traded fouls, while Eastern Mennonite earned a couple of corners, but the score remained level at zero after 45 minutes.
In the second, the action intensified. For several minutes, the Knights were knocking on the door of an opening goal.
In the 59th minute, London Timothy got loose for a howling shot from well out that sailed just over the crossbar. Then, Landon Stock found himself in alone with the keeper, but had his shot rejected by the keeper and the game remained tied.
A few minutes later, Stock set up Dexter Gunderson with a similar chance, but he still couldn't find the back of the net.
Unfortunately for the Knights, Eastern Mennonite was the first to solve the keeper with just ten minutes left to play. After Zack Snow made a couple of quality saves for the Knights, the Royals cashed in on a corner after a net-front scramble to score the eventual game winner.
Snow made five saves in goal, splitting time with Isaac Northcutt, and the Knights attempted seven shots on the attack with a few high-danger chances.
Looking Ahead
The Knights will gear up for their first match against a USA South opponent on Saturday, September 23rd at 4:00 PM. They'll host Methodist, a team they tied with on the road a season ago, at Knight Stadium.
