BUENA VISTA, Va. - League play got off to an entertaining start on Saturday afternoon as the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team played host to Methodist at Knight Stadium.
A goal by each side in the first half would be all the scoring during the game, resulting in a tie as each team secured a point in the conference standings.
Isaac Northcutt was called upon early by the Knights, making several key saves in the opening half. He made two impressive stops back-to-back inside the box, but a penalty was called during the play.
The Monarchs made no mistake on the ensuing kick to snatch an early one goal lead.
Despite the deficit, adversity seemed to spark Southern Virginia as the developed several quality chances on the attack.
In the final minute of the first half, Mark Grimmer settled a deflected pass inside the box, then found an open Holden Calder who drilled a shot into the left side of the cage to knot the score at one. It's the first goal of Calder's career.
The teams traded chances in the second half, but each defense held its ground until the final whistle blew. The Knights outpaced the Monarchs with 11 shots, six of which were on goal.

Southern Virginia will turn its attention to Johnson & Wales for the penultimate non-conference game of their season. Kickoff is set for Wednesday, September 30th at 4:00 PM in Charlotte.
