ASHLAND, Va. - The Southern Virginia University women's volleyball team managed to rebound this week after an opening night loss on Tuesday. After nearly upsetting the hosts, Randolph-Macon, in five sets, they cruised past Mary Washington to find the win column for the first time this season.
Game One
The Knights squared off with Randolph-Macon to open the weekend, looking to record their first win over the Yellow Jackets in four attempts. After conceding the first set by a wide margin, Southern Virginia settled in quickly.
Baylee Mirabal was on a tear at the beginning of the second. Three straight kills helped her lead the team with 12 by the end of the match. Ultimately, the Knights claimed the set win, then took the fourth set after dropping the third. After falling behind early in the fifth, they almost staged a dramatic come-from-behind victory, but fell 15-11 in the end.
Game Two
Fueled by a close loss in the first game of the day, a dominant display was in order against Mary Washington. The Knights flew out of the gates, using a string of seven consecutive points to close out the opening set.
Anne Downs was the top producer on the attack this time around, recording 11 kills while hitting .400. The team also doubled up on the Eagles in blocks thanks to the work of Ryann Vail, Summer Hahn and Adah Elam, each of whom were involved in at least three blocks.
The Knights eventually put their opponents to bed after a kill from Elam during a thrilling third set.
Looking Ahead
Southern Virginia will remain close to home during their next batch of contests. They'll face Gettysburg College in the W&L Invitational on Saturday, September 12th at 1:30 PM in Lexington, Virginia.
