NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Bryce Pendleton's 27-points and a last second
three-point shot from Ade Swann were not enough as the Southern
Virginia Men's Basketball team fell to Christopher Newport 93-82 in
OT. Swann's shot went in as time expired after it hit the rim, and
then the backboard and fell in to send the game to overtime. The
Knights had fought back all night, as the Captains twice had lead
of double-digits. However, Pendleton and Swann would not let VU go
down without a fight, and there efforts helped SVU stay close until
the end. For their efforts the duo was named to the Christopher
Newport Invitational All-Tournament Team.
"You definitely walk away fro the loss disappointed, but you
can't be upset with effort like that," said Head Coach Brian
Pendleton. "It felt like we were playing catch-up all night. We
would make runs, and then they (CNU) would jump out to another big
lead. I was hopeful that when Ade's shot went in, we'd have
momentum going into the overtime."
The momentum did not last as CNU scored 15-points in the
extended period to put the Knights away. Pendleton led all players
with his 27 on 10-18 shooting and 5-10 shooting from beyond the
three-point arc. Swann was 8-16 from the field and 1-5 from beyond
the arc. Chris Lewis was the leading Knight rebounder as he pulled
down 5.
The Knights were 29-61 from the field and put in 9 of 22 three
pointers. The Knights were solid if not overwhelming from the
free-throw line as they went 15 for 23 from the line. SVU
unfortunately lost a critical battle as they allowed the Captains
to pull down 56 rebounds, and 15 alone to CNU center Mark
Blasingame.
The Knights are now 6-3 on the season. SVU returns to action
Dec. 2 when they travel to face another NCAA D.III opponent in
Shenandoah. The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
