BUENA VISTA, Va. Cory Evans shot 100%
from the field on 11-for-11 shooting as the Southern Virginia Men's
Basketball team beat Shenandoah 93-79. Evans also went 6-for-6 from
3-point range as he scored a career high 36-points. He also added
six rebounds for the night. Ade Swann contributed
22-points and added 9-assists and 5-rebounds to add to the cause
and help the Knights move to 10-4 on the season.
"This was a complete team effort," said Head Coach Brian
Pendleton ."We had a couple of players with outstanding
individual performances, but they were able to do that because the
team performed at such a high level collectively. "
The game was tightly contested throughout, and the Knights had
the biggest leads in both halves. In the first term, SVU broke free
from a 13-13 tie at the 13:32 mark and went on a 10-0 run to
establish a lead. Shenandoah did not go away, and whittled the lead
down to only a two-point lead before the hosts were able to extend
by a basket the half-time lead at 44-40.
SVU had established an inside presence in the first half as they
cleared the boards for a 17-8 advantage in rebounds. The Knights
had a shaky start from the free-throw line as they were only able
to convert on nine of their fifteen attempts in the first half.
The second half proved to be a tighter affair as Shenandoah and
SVU traded baskets throughout the majority of the period. For the
first ten minutes neither team was able to take a lead larger than
4-points. The success for the Knights was in large part to
Pendleton's team's execution of the game plan.
"Shenandoah has some great players," said Pendleton. "We knew
that we needed to play an aggressive but smart defense, and we knew
that if we executed we'd have a chance for the win. In the end, I'm
really grateful that Cory had such a strong night. He carried us
through some big moments tonight."
SVU was able to finish off the Hornets in the last few minutes
of the game and extended the lead from the line, as Shenandoah
looked to stop the clock. SVU eventually finished 27-for-38 from
the free throw line. Southern Virginia also out-rebounded the
visitors 35-27 and forced Shenandoah into 18-turnovers. The Hornets
were led by Mitchell Dudley who had 24-points and 7-rebounds.
SVU returns to action Jan. 19 when they travel to play USCAA foe
Apprentice. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm. The game marks the
start of a 7-game road stretch for the Knights.
