Box Score BUENA VISTA, Va. On a night when the Southern Virginia
volleyball team was seeking to raise funds for breast cancer
awareness and research, the team was also able to record a 3-0
sweep over visiting Eastern Mennonite. Having had a successful
weekend at the Randolph College Invitational, the Knights were
looking to keep the momentum going, and found a rhythm early on
against the visiting Royals. SVU used a 8-0 run to start the game
to get a stranglehold on the first set, and was able to close out
the visitors with a 25-8 win.
Led by Brynn McGinn's 3-kills in the first set, SVU was able to
sprint past the Royals, and the first set win helped set them up
for the rest of the match. Ali Krebs directed the offense from the
setter position, and accounted for 19-assists on the evening.
SVU was looking to make a big leap towards the USCAA National
Tournament with a win, but EMU had not rolled over and died just
yet. The Royals mounted an early second set lead, and looked to
make a match of the night, but SVU came back from 6-points behind
at 8-14, and then again from two points behind at 18-20, to get a
25-23 set win.
Shyanne Ison recorded three kills in the second game, and helped
the Knights get the come-from-behind win, and took the wind out of
the sails of the visitors. Still possessing a strong fight, EMU
again built up an early set lead in the third, but could not
maintain the momentum, and surrendered the lead to the Knights
later in the match. McGinn was finding a groove, and racked up
another 4-kills on the way to a team-leading 9-kills for the
night.
The Knights recorded another 25-23 set win, and recorded the
sweep over the Royals. Nicole Gwynn and Paige Allred provided a
strong defensive presence for the Knights as they helped from the
defensive receiving end, as well as from the blocking end. The
victory helps push the Knights to an 11-16 record.
Along with the win, the Knights were able to help raise funds
through concessions and donations to help the Susan G. Komen
Foundation in the fight against breast cancer. Combined with the
women's soccer game earlier in the day, the two teams were able to
combine for over $560 that will be donated. SVU will next face off
with Hollins, Oct. 21. Game time is set for 6:30 pm.
