Volleyball Splits First Day At Maroon Classic, But Loses Two On Second

| Box Score 3

SALEM, Va. The Southern Virginia volleyball team looked to carry momentum from an early week win into the Maroon Classic, but the Knights found mixed results going 1-3 in the tournament. SVU started off the tournament with a match against Maryville College of Tennessee. The Knights had one of their best hitting games of the season, as they recorded 44-kills in the four sets played. Maryville came out on top on the first set, as they recorded a 25-17 win. Shyanne Ison had a strong first set, as she recorded 5-kills to keep the Knights close.

SVU was able to get closer in the second set, but still fell 25-22. The third set was a make-or-break set for the team, and they responded with a 25-22 win behind 10-total kills from Brynn McGinn (6-kills) and Bryndy Anderson (4-kills). The duo accounted for a third of the kills in the set, and SVU looked to have momentum going in to the fourth. Maryville was able to withstand the blow, and came back with a vengeance for a 25-19 win, and the 3-1 match win.

The Knights faced a familiar face in Ferrum in the second match of the tournament. SVU had played the Panthers earlier in the week, and the result was another 3-0 win like the previous match. SVU needed only 15-total kills to dispatch Ferrum, and was led by Tori Tuttle, who recorded 7-kills. Sara Harmon provided strong leadership from the setter position, as she racked up 17-assists to lead the SVU offense. Set scores of 25-11, 25-21 and 25-17 got the Knights back in to the win column and ended the day for the team at 1-1 in the tournament.

Southern Virginia opened the next day of the tournament facing off against the tournament hosts in Roanoke. SVU had faced the Maroons two weeks previous, and had a lopsided loss against Roanoke. SVU looked to make amends for that competition, and pushed the hosts all the way in the first set, losing 25-23. A positive response ensued for the visitors, as Anderson had a solid second set with 5-kills, and guided the Knight to the 25-22 victory. Ali Krebs was having a terrific tournament, recording 33-assists against the Maroons, and registering many more in the other three matches. Despite the strong second set, SVU could not keep the attack flowing, and fell to Roanoke 25-8, and 25-19.

The final match of the tournament pitted SVU against another early season opponent in Averett. The cougars had matched up with SVU at the Washington & Lee tournament in September. The Knights had little going right in the end of the tournament, as Averett was able to sweep the Knights, 25-18, 25-10 and 25-22. Ison led the way for the Knights with 10-kills in the three sets, and for her efforts was named to the Maroon Classic All-Tournament Team.

The 1-3 finish moves the Knights to 8-13 on the season. SVU hits the road again on Oct. 12 when they travel to Athens, W.V. to take part in a tri-match hosted by Concord University, and featuring King College as the third team. SVU faces off against King at 4:00, and then finishes with the hosts at 6:00.
