ASHLAND, Va. The Southern Virginia Softball team traveled to
play Randolph-Macon in a season opening double-header, and despite
solid efforts, the Knights fell in both games 5-1 and 7-0. The
Knights were originally scheduled to play at home, but field
conditions were unplayable, so SVU it the road for the visit to the
Yellow Jackets.
In the first game the SVU bats were silent, as the team could
only muster 3-hits. Amanda
Otto, Kyla Christmas and Chloe
Stephens were able to get on base via their bats. Christmas was
the starting pitcher and went the distance against the hosts giving
up the 5-runs on 6-hits, with 6-strikeouts and 5-walks.
SVU had mutiple opportunities to get runners home as they left
5-runners on base, but could not find the hits to drive in the
runs, and get the game closer. Christi Wise was able to get the win
for RMC, as she went 4-innings and gave up no runs, with
3-strikeouts, and 1-walk.
In the second game of the double-header SVU looked to improve
from the previous game. The hit total for the Knights improved, but
only by one, and they were unable to bring anyone across home
plate. Christmas, again, got a hit for the visitors, and was joined
by Abbie Baxter, Chelsey
Papworth and Laura Tome. Knight hitters struggled with the
RMC pitching as they struck out seven times, and drew no walks.
Otto pitched the second game, and could not keep the RMC bats at
bay, as she gave up the 7-runs on 13-hits, with 2-strikeouts and
2-walks. Heather Lewis recorded the win for RMC.
SVU starts the season at 0-2. The Knights return to action March
6. when they travel for a double-header at Sweet Briar College.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
