Buena Vista, Va. – Southern Virginia University Director of Athletics Josh Monsen has announced the hiring of Kolby Kemp as the next head coach of the Knights softball program.
Kemp takes over the program after serving as an assistant coach at Southern Virginia for the past four seasons. During his time with the Knights, he helped develop 15 USA South All-Conference selections while playing a key role in player development, recruiting, and program growth.
"We are excited to name Kolby Kemp as the next leader of our softball program," said Monsen. "Kolby has been an integral part of the success and development of our team over the last four years. His experience, leadership, and commitment to our student-athletes make him the ideal person to lead Southern Virginia softball into its next chapter."
Prior to joining the Knights, Kemp built an extensive background in softball administration, officiating, and youth development. He has been a certified fastpitch umpire with USA Softball, NFHS, and PGF since 2001 and possesses extensive knowledge of NCAA rules, compliance, and recruiting regulations.
A graduate of the University of Utah, Kemp also brings decades of leadership experience within the softball community. He served as Area Commissioner for USA Softball in Layton, Utah, from 2010 to 2017, overseeing league operations, compliance, coaching standards, and safety initiatives while building strong relationships with community stakeholders.
Kemp previously served as President of Taylorsville Girls' Fastpitch from 2007 to 2011, where he managed scheduling, staffing, and finances while increasing player participation by 20 percent and strengthening community partnerships and sponsorships.
Most recently, Kemp spent more than a decade as Director of Softball Operations for the WACKY Warrior Foundation. In that role, he directed tournament operations, including scheduling, logistics, registration management, umpire assignments, and event compliance while ensuring a positive experience for participants and families.
In addition to his coaching and administrative experience, Kemp was a member of the 1993 USA Junior Men's National Team and served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Brazil Campinas Mission from 1993 to 1995.
Kemp now takes the helm of Southern Virginia softball as the seventh head coach in program history continuing to build on the growth the Knights have established within the USA South Conference.
