BUENA VISTA, Va. The Southern Virginia Baseball team suffered a
tough first loss to Guilford in a double-header, but bounced back
to beat the Quakers in the second game. SVU suffered the loss 12-2
in the firs game, as the Quakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the
top of the first inning.
SVU was able to hold the visitors in the second inning as Nick
Denny forced the Quakers to hit into three consecutive
fielder's choice plays, and get the Knights out of the second
unharmed. Denny could not stop the scoring in the third, as
Guilford tacked on three more runs to take a 6-0 advantage into the
bottom of the third. Skyler
Shope and Jake Johnson gave the Knights hope with a
triple from Shope followed by a 2-run homerun from Johnson.
The 6-2 score line offered a chance to the host, but Guilford
closed the door two innings later, as they scored 3-runs to put the
game out of reach for the Knights. The visitors added two more runs
in the top of the sixth inning, and one in the seventh to get the
ten run margin of victory.
Denny took the loss to fall to 2-3 on the season. He pitched
five innings, with Ryan
Carpenter finishing the game. Denny gave up 14-hits and
9-earned runs, with Carpenter giving up 1-hit and one earned run.
SVU looked for a quick turn around, and found it in the bottom
of the first inning as Jordan
Williams scored on an Andrew
Snider double. Guilford answered in the top of the second with
three runs off of pitcher Derek
Snider, but SVU did not fold trailing after the second inning.
The Knights had put a run up on the board in the second, and the
third inning saw the Knights tie up the game, as Johnson doubled
and was brought home by a Cox single.
The 3-3 game didn't stay that way for long as the Knights got a
fourth in the fourth, and then added three insurance runs in the
bottom of the sixth. The four run was all Snider needed to put away
Guilford, and split the series between the two teams.
Snider went seven innings giving up 7-hits and surrendering
2-earned runs, and striking out 2-batters. The win pushes Snider to
3-2.
With the victory SVU is now 9-6 on the season. The Knights
return to action March 12 when they face off against Penn State-
Harrisburg. Game time is 1:00 pm.
