COVINGTON, Va. Trailing by four runs in the bottom of the
seventh inning, the Southern Virginia Baseball team rattled off
eight runs over two innings to come from behind and beat Penn St.
-Harrisburg 10-6. The visitors had tacked on 6-runs over two
innings in the sixth and seventh to erase a 2-run lead from a Jake
Johnson fourth inning homerun.
The seventh inning started well for the hosts as Ryan
Carpenter doubled to bring two runners home. Johnson then
doubled to bring Carpenter in, and C.J. Andrus singled to finish the four-run
outburst. The game was tied, and moved to the eighth, where SVU as
able to pull away from PSH.
SVU benefited from worsening weather conditions, as a rain storm
that had forced the move from Buena Vista, VA., got to the
visitors. The PSH pitcher found himself in a jam as he hit or
walked four consecutive batters, bringing home three more runs. A
sacrifice fly by Tyler Cox brought in the fourth run, to give
the Knights the four-run cushion they needed to get the win.
Johnson had a strong outing for the hosts as he went 3-for-3
with a homerun and 4-RBI's. Darrell Brown pitched 5 and 1/3 innings
getting the no decision. Brown surrendered 7-hits, with
2-strikeouts and 4-earned runs out of 5-runs scored.
Derek Snider, after a full seven inning the day previous, went
the final 3 and 2/3 innings to get the win. Snider got
3-strikeouts, giving up three hits and allowing one earned run to
score, before shutting PSH down in the seventh, eighth and ninth.
The Knights are now 10-6 on the season. Southern Virginia will
return to action March. 23 when they travel to play at Ferrum. The
first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm. making the game the first
night game of the season for SVU.
