STAUNTON, Va. The Southern Virginia Softball team's offense came
alive in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first
double-header and carried into the second game, as the Knights beat
Mary Baldwin 5-0 & 9-0. Heading into the seventh inning, SVU
had only got on base three times from hits, and had only been in
scoring position once the entire game.
Despite the slow offense, SVU was having a dominant game on the
defensive end. After a shaky start to the first inning, when MBC
had runners in scoring position, the Knights clamped down in the
field, and allowed only one batter to get on base, via a walk in
the third, for the rest of the game. The Knight gloves were so
strong, that after the base runner in the third, SVU had
13-straight put outs to end the game.
The bats came to life in the top of the seventh when SVU got
four hits and put up their five runs for the victory. Abbie
Baxter continued a fine hitting form as she doubled in the
inning for two RBI's. Kyla
Christmas had tripled to send in the first run.
The Knights carried the momentum from the first game and
threatened in the top of the first, but could not get a runner
home. That all changed in the second, as Baxter sent a ball over
the fence to start the scoring and hitting. Abbie
Fisher ensured that the Knights left the second with more than
a one run lead, as she hit a grand slam to give the Knights a 5-0
lead.
SVU would add 4-more total runs in the fourth and fifth innings
to get the 9-0 margin of victory. Fisher went 3-for-4 in the game
with 5-RBI's while Baxter 2-of-3 with 1-RBI. Christmas helped her
pitching with a 3-for-4 performance from the late. Christmas
pitched both games and got the shut-outs to extend her overall
record to 14-2.
SVU totaled 18-hits in the game, and extended their win streak
to 5-games. The Knights return to action April 2, when they host
Briarcliffe. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm at
Laurel Park.
