BUENA VISTA, Va. The Southern Virginia Softball team used an
offensive onslaught in the first game of a double-header to pace
the team to a sweep of the games and a series victory over
Gallaudet. The Knights exploded for nine runs in the first inning
coming off of 8-hits.
Kyla Christmas scored twice in the inning as she hit
for a double and a homerun. Christmas hit another homerun in the
game as she went 3-for-3 with 5-RBI's. Arianne
Holmes and Nancy Lemmon also went 3-for-3 as the Knights
totaled 16-hits for the first game. Amanda
Otto added a homerun, as she went 5-innings to get the win as
she struck out 1-batter and gave up 3-hits for the shutout victory.
Gallaudet was able to put up stiffer resistance in the second
game as SVU could not get a run across home plate until the third
inning when four SVU runners came home. The Knights tacked on
another run in the fourth as Lindsey Mellor came home to give the
Knights a 5-run lead.
The visitors put up a fight as they scored five times in the top
of the fifth inning to tie up the game. A three run shot for the
visitors tied the game up for the Bison, and left the Knights
scrambling against a foe they had comfortably beaten an hour
earlier.
The Knights regrouped by scoring six runs in the bottom of the
fifth to put the game finally out of reach of the Bison. Mallory
King started the inning off with a triple, and was brought home
later to get the Knights a lead that they would not relinquish. The
visitors did not give up without a fight as they scored one more
run in the top of the seventh before the Knights extinguished the
rally for the win.
With the wins, SVU moves to 21-7 on the season. The sweep
of the double-header also give the Knights a series sweep over the
Bison. SVU will return to action April 19, when they face off
against St. Paul's. The first game is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
