BUENA VISTA, Va. Both games of the double header required extra
innings, as the Southern Virginia Softball team came from behind in
both games to beat Briarcliffe 2-1 & 5-4. In the first game the
Knights headed to extra innings after neither team was able to
score a run.
A pitching duel had commenced as both teams' pitchers shut down
the offenses. Kyla Christmas shined for the Knights as she
struck out seven batters in the game, and allowed only 5-hits
throughout the game.
SVU threatened in to score in the bottom of the third and in the
first extra inning of the game, as they had runners on third base
looking to head home. Unfortunately, Briarcliffe was able to stifle
the bats, and allowed the visitors a chance for the win late in the
game. Briarcliffe took that step in the top of the ninth, when the
visitors brought home their only run.
The Knights responded for the win in the ninth with Arianne
Holmes batting in Christmas for the winning run.
The second game started the same way as the pitchers dominated
the bats. Runs weren't scored until Briarcliffe reeled off 4-runs
in the top of the fifth inning. SVU was able to overcome the
deficit as they chipped away at it with 3-runs in the sixth, and
the tying run in the seventh.
Chloe Stephens batted in two runs in the sixth to get
the Knights close. SVU has the chance to win it in the bottom of
the seventh as they scored a run, and had a runner on third base,
but Briarcliffe shut out the Knights to take the game to an eighth
inning.
Chelsey Papworth scored the winning run after fielding
errors by Briarcliffe allowed her to come home. With the double win
the Knights move to 16-4 on the season. SVU returns to action April
5 when they host St. Pauls's. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
