BRIDGEWATER, Va. Bridgewater College used strong pitching to
stifle the Southern Virginia Softball team's bats, and pushed the
Knights to two losses 3-0 and 6-2. SVU could only tally 4-hits all
afternoon, and only got one hit in the first game.
Bridgewater snuffed out the Knights in the first game, as they
tacked on three runs in the first inning. The three runs would be
all the Eagles needed, as pitching was the name of the game for the
day. The hosts struck out SVU 13-times in the first game, and shut
down any offensive ideas the Knights had.
Kyla Christmas had a strong outing in the first game
as she recovered from the first inning scoring to limit the Eagles'
bats. Christmas gave up only the three hits from the first inning,
and then shut out the hosts the rest of the game. Unfortunately the
Knights offense could not get the runs Christmas needed for the
win.
SVU was again in a hole in the first inning of the second game,
as the Eagles sent three runners home. The three runs would be all
that Bridgewater would need for the rest of the game. Unlike the
first game, the Eagles were able to find more run support for their
pitcher.
The Knights' bats awoke a little as they recorded three hits for
the afternoon. Christmas, Abbie
Baxter and Arianne Holmes were able to get on base via a
hit. A sacrifice hit in the top of the fifth helped give the
Knights to runs to get the close to the Eagles at 4-2. Bridgewater
closed the door on the Knights in the bottom of the fifth, as they
tacked on another run and then scored again in the sixth inning.
With the losses the Knights fall to 21-9. SVU is scheduled to
return to action April 24 when they travel to play at Virginia
State.
