Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. With two players in double-digit kills, and
the team totaling 42-kills, Southern Virginia's volleyball team won
consecutive games for the first time in the 2010 season, beating
Eastern Mennonite 3-1. Shyanne Ison and Bryndy Anderson both
recorded 10-kills to lead the Knights on the attack, and give them
four wins on the season.
The Knights were able to get the first set win early, as they
recorded a 25-22 win that gave them momentum for the game. Second
sets have been the challenge for the Knights throughout the season,
and EMU exploited this for a second set win, 23-25. At 1-1 the
visitors needed to regroup to get the win, and overcome some of the
errors that have plagued the young team early on this season.
Brynn McGinn (9-kills) and Tori Tuttle (8-kills) were causing
the Royals problems, and the team was able to record double-digit
kills in each set to keep the hosts at bay. Nicole Gwynn was
directing the offense as she assisted on 28-kills with no assist
errors to show for the night's work.
Tuttle and Paige Allred thwarted numerous Royal attacks, and
were supported by Ali Krebs who led the team with 17-digs. The
defensive efforts were paying off, as the Knights came out on top
in the third set with a resounding 25-15 defeat. SVU had grabbed
the match, and would not relinquish control, as they scored the
25-18 fourth set and match win. The Knights hit .164 in the
offensive end, and had no assist errors, going a staggering
35-for-35 in the setup category. Equally impressive was the team
defense. Led by Krebs' dig total, SVU totaled 58-digs in the
match.
The win pushed the Knights' record to 4-7. SVU will now look to
carry the momentum as they head to Lynchburg Va., for a tri-match
event with Lynchburg College and Rutgers Camden. SVU plays Rutgers
Camden first at 3:00 pm, followed by a 6:00 pm match with the
hosts.
