FRONT ROYAL, Va. With several opportunities for goals, the
Southern Virginia men's soccer team could needed only one goal to
put the Christendom Crusaders away, winning 1-0. The Knights were
able to register 14-shots all game against the hosts, and had five
of those shots on goal.
SVU started brightly, as they were led by Brady Johnson with
4-shots, and two on goal. The visitors put up seven shots in the
first half, and put the Crusader goal under constant pressure.
Despite the early pressure, Southern Virginia needed to regroup, as
keeper Ben May took a big blow to the head after a collision with a
Christendom player. Both players were removed, and SVU had to call
upon Richard Crist to finish the game. Crist would have little to
do, as he would face three shots needing saves all evening.
Johnson, gave the visitors the only goal of the game in the 41st
minute when he hit home a solo effort past the Christendom keeper.
Brandon Seeberger, Dax Farnsworth, and Nelson McNaughton also hit
shots that required quick reflexes from the hosts' goalkeeper, but
no more scoring would happen in the game. Mcnaughton headlined a
stout defense that kept the hosts from registering more than
3-shots all game. Accompanying McNaughton were Ezra Belmont,
Checketts, and Kelan Macy, all four of whom, shut down a team that
had exploded for 9-goals in a game earlier in the season.
With the win, SVU moves to 6-2 on the season. The record is the
best in the first eight games of a season in program history. The
Knights will stay on the road for a fourth consecutive game when
they travel for a rematch with Gallaudet. Earlier in the season,
SVU recorded a 5-1 win behind a Chris Teerlink hat-trick. Game time
for the game is set at 7:30 pm.
