BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's
volleyball team recorded a split during Saturday's home tri-match
falling 2-3 to Peace College before defeating Hollins University
3-1.
Southern Virginia vs. Peace
After dropping a close-fought Game 1 to Peace 22-25, Southern
Virginia responded with an emphatic 25-11 win in their second game
with the Pacers.
Peace answered back with a lopsided victory in Game 3, downing
the Knights 25-12 and Southern Virginia forced a deciding fifth
game with a five-point victory in Game 4.
Trailing 8-14 in Game 5, Southern Virginia rallied behind solid
serving from junior setter Nicole
Gwynn (Hamilton, Mont.) scoring five consecutive points to
pull within one of the Pacers, before Gwynn ended the game with an
error on her sixth strait serve.
Senior Brynn
McGinn (Bedford, Ind.) led the Knights against Peace with 13
kills to go along with 15 digs. Freshman outside hitter Camille Tua
(Lehi, Utah) added 11 kills in the loss.
Gwynn dished out a match-high 38 assists, while sophomore libero
Shyanne
Ison (Mt. Pleasant, Utah) led all players with 18 digs.
Southern Virginia vs. Hollins
The opening three games between Southern Virginia and Hollins
were all decided by three points or less with the Knights taking
the first two (25-22, 26-24) and Hollins winning the third
(23-25).
Southern Virginia pulled away during Game 4 with a 10-point win
sealing the victory over Hollins as the Knights moved to 7-2 in
their last nine matches.
Tua continued her strong play Saturday against Hollins recording
a match-high 15 kills to lead the Knights on the day with 26 total
kills. McGinn and freshman outside hitter Larissa
Conger (Merno, Colo.) each added 10 kills in the victory, while
McGinn had a match-high 23 digs.
Sophomore setter Sara Harmon
(Buean Vista, Va.) led all players with 21 assists.
Women's volleyball has a week off before closing out its regular
season schedule next Saturday at the EMU Tri-Match. The Knights
will take on host school Eastern Mennonite University at 1 p.m.
followed by a match with Marymount University at 3 p.m.
